October 2024 - Don Rushton - the Club received the very sad news that Don died peacefully on 7th October. He was our 'Father of the Club' and achieved 100 years of age in April this year. He was educated at Solihull School and St John's College, Cambridge. He became a Chartered Mechanical Engineer working for major companies in the UK and eventually moved on to consultancy leading major contracts in Britain and abroad. He was married to Muriel until she died then married Lindsay 30 years ago and lived in Snitterfield. He Chaired Stratford Conservative Association and joined our Probus Club in 1991 becoming Events Secretary in 2000 and then President in 2002/03 and will be greatly missed. We have passed our condolences on to his family.
We have received a fascinating connection from John Bishop from Canada - he has just been installed as President of Probus Toronto. John's father Victor Bishop was a very early member of the Stratford on Avon Probus Club, joined the committee and held various posts during the 1980s and became our President in 1984/85. John's recent address to his club was - "Members of Probus Toronto, ladies and gentlemen, it is my very great honour to accept your invitation to become President of this illustrious Social Club and I thank you for your confidence in me. This is especially poignant for me as 40 years ago this month, my late father Victor Bishop was installed as President of the Probus Club in Stratford-upon-Avon in the UK, so, like father like son, I am following in my father’s footsteps."
Following John Firth's move to East Sussex, the Speaker Secretary role was taken over by Phil Elliott
